  • Developed in England around the twelfth century, English bulldogs are a mix of the extinct Alaunt dogs and Mastiff war dogs which have a similar face and figure to English bulldogs.
  • They were brought to the British Isles for bull baiting competitions in which they would grab onto the bulls’ nose with their powerful bite and hold them at bay. This sport was banded in 1835 when English bulldogs began to evolve into what they look like today.
  • Here is a personal example of what they look like today. Still very similar to what they looked like before, just a little heavier and a lot more pampered. This dog in specific is my dog named Max, He is 5 years old, almost 2 ft tall on all fours and probably can’t take down a bull.
  • Adopted from a family friend in 2019 when he was 6 months old. He was the second to last picked from his litter alongside his brother named “bowser” which the original owners kept.
  • Hobbies of this 60-pound animal include sleeping, going on walks, spending time with his brother, and road trips.

Common traits in English bulldogs include a people-oriented personality, curious and watchful behavior, a short but strong physique, and their obvious loud breathing due to their pushed in noses. English bulldogs are a very affectionate breed of dog and a great pet to have if you are an inactive person, most English bulldogs get tired within 30 minutes and are comfortable in nearly any position.
